Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. With ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, Speechify is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead Windows desktop application development.
In this role, you will own the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ as needed. You'll define and enforce best practices across the Windows codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability.
Key responsibilities include driving accessibility efforts by integrating Microsoft UI Automation and related frameworks, ensuring keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and usability for users with disabilities. You'll collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and stakeholders to shape feature planning and the long-term Windows platform roadmap. You'll take full ownership of feature lifecycles from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance. You'll also identify and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing robust architectural solutions.
Required qualifications include 3+ years of Windows desktop application development with Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, and XAML, plus ideally native Windows code experience (C++, Win32/WinRT/COM). You need deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interop between managed and native code. You should have a proven track record shipping production-quality desktop applications emphasizing reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. Strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs is essential, along with solid software engineering fundamentals (OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading). You must have experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, plus excellent communication skills and a user-centric mindset.
Preferred qualifications include experience with automated UI testing, performance optimization for desktop apps, localization/globalization, telemetry and crash reporting, CI/CD workflows for desktop applications, and demonstrated ability to own feature areas long-term.
