Relay is a digital banking platform designed for self-made business owners, providing clarity and control over cash flow and financial operations. The company is building banking products that help millions of small businesses succeed through real visibility and data-driven insights. The Senior Software Engineer (Voyager) role sits at the intersection of infrastructure, AI, and innovation. Voyager is Relay's forward-looking engineering team that builds technology foundations enabling AI and insights across the product, while also serving as the innovation center for exploring emerging technologies. Key responsibilities include: - AI Infrastructure: Design, build, and deploy secure, reusable LLM systems that power differentiated product experiences. Own these systems across their full lifecycle—from design through deployment, monitoring, and optimization. - R&D and Proof-of-Concepts: Lead exploratory initiatives to evaluate and validate emerging technologies, producing clear recommendations on adoption strategy and implementation approach. - Developer Enablement: Provide other engineering teams with tooling, patterns, and guidance to ship AI workflows quickly and safely, acting as a force multiplier across the organization. - Consultative Partnership: Work alongside product teams as the AI and infrastructure expert, helping them make sound technical decisions rather than building everything centrally. - Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities for technical, process, and product improvements, influencing long-term technical strategy. You bring 3+ years of full-stack software engineering experience with a track record of leading significant components or features to successful delivery. You're comfortable moving between exploratory spikes and production-hardened systems, knowing when each approach is appropriate. You have strong judgment about emerging technology and can distinguish genuinely useful innovations from hype. You mentor junior engineers, drive code quality improvements, and thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments. Bonus qualifications include startup or high-growth tech experience, hands-on LLM work (self-hosting, open models, retrieval systems, agentic workflows), platform/shared services experience, JavaScript/TypeScript proficiency, and AWS expertise. Tech stack: React, TypeScript, React Native (frontend); Node.js, TypeScript, Terraform, AWS services (backend); Cursor, Claude, GitHub, Datadog, Jira, Metabase (tools).
