DeepL is building the Operating System for Global Communication, with a focus on real-time voice translation and interpretation. The Voice team is in a 0-to-1 engineering phase, having launched customer-facing features in late 2024 and now scaling to solve the hardest problems in AI interaction: eliminating transcript instability ("flickering"), achieving sub-millisecond latency through chunked inference, and delivering natural-sounding audio streams. You will join a dynamic, cross-functional squad alongside Researchers, Product Managers, and Designers to build proprietary models, streaming architectures, and user interfaces that enable real-time conversation without language barriers. Key Responsibilities: - Adopt a 0-to-1 builder mindset, thriving in ambiguity and prototyping features rapidly before scaling them - Maintain product obsession, optimizing for human experience (e.g., recognizing that 99% accuracy is meaningless if audio arrives 3 seconds late) - Ship end-to-end features across the full stack: high-performance React/TypeScript frontends, streaming audio backend services, and AI inference integration - Debug and resolve real-time communication edge cases: sub-second latency spikes, transcript flicker, audio glitches, unstable networks - Collaborate closely with PMs, Designers, and AI Researchers to scope and solve hard product and technical challenges - Demonstrate high agency: automate slow processes, improve unclear documentation, take ownership without waiting for permission What We Value: - Product-first mindset: you ask how features drive enterprise deals before writing code - Full-stack fluency: comfortable building polished UIs in React/TypeScript and shipping backend services in Node.js/TypeScript (or strongly transferable language) - Real-time expertise: WebRTC, WebSockets, streaming architectures, latency-sensitive systems - AI-native velocity: leverage GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar tools to accelerate development and eliminate repetitive work - High agency and ownership DeepL operates a Unified Engineering Pipeline: if you pass the bar, you may be matched to the highest-priority role across Core Product, Platform, Voice, or Enterprise based on your skillset. Company Context: DeepL is a global AI product and research company founded in 2017 by CEO Jaroslaw Kutylowski. With ~1,000 employees across 90+ nationalities and offices in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the US, and Japan, DeepL serves 200,000+ business customers and millions of individuals across 228 markets. Backed by Benchmark, IVP, and Index Ventures, DeepL builds the entire stack in-house: training next-gen LLMs on proprietary NVIDIA DGX SuperPODs and delivering real-time Language AI to 300+ million users. Work Environment: - Hybrid schedule: twice-weekly office attendance with flexible hours - Global, distributed team with 90+ nationalities - Monthly Hack Fridays for passion projects and cross-team collaboration - 30 days annual leave plus mental health resources - Virtual Shares for all employees - Regular in-person team and company-wide events Requirements: The posting does not explicitly state years of experience or formal education requirements. However, the role expects: - Demonstrated full-stack software engineering capability (React/TypeScript frontend, Node.js/TypeScript backend or equivalent) - Hands-on experience with real-time systems (WebRTC, WebSockets, streaming architectures) - Proven ability to ship end-to-end features in production - Product-oriented mindset and customer empathy - Comfort with ambiguity and 0-to-1 building environments - Willingness to learn and ramp on unfamiliar languages if you have strong transferable skills
