Turnitin, a global leader in education technology serving over 16,000 institutions across 185 countries, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their shared services team. This role focuses on designing and developing scalable backend systems that power Turnitin's suite of educational platforms including Gradescope, Feedback Studio, and Originality. You will be responsible for architecting and optimizing Java-based backend services and serverless applications on AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge). Key responsibilities include designing RESTful APIs and event-driven systems, implementing CI/CD pipelines, optimizing services for performance and cost-efficiency, and contributing to frontend components as needed. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams including architects, product managers, and engineering leads across distributed locations in Europe and the USA. A critical aspect of this role is mentoring junior developers, fostering their growth, and sharing best practices. You'll ensure high-quality code through peer reviews, automated testing, and comprehensive documentation of shared components. Required qualifications include 8+ years of backend development experience with strong Java proficiency, hands-on experience with serverless frameworks and AWS technologies, and solid frontend skills (React, Web Components). You must demonstrate expertise in distributed systems, scalability, data modeling, and software development best practices including design patterns, TDD, and debugging. Experience with CI/CD tools and the ability to communicate effectively in agile, cross-functional environments are essential. Preferred qualifications include understanding or experience with AI/ML technologies. Turnitin offers a remote-first culture with comprehensive benefits including competitive paid time off, health coverage, education reimbursement, and a focus on work-life balance and well-being.
