GitLab is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build GitLab Duo CLI, bringing AI-assisted experiences into developers' terminal workflows. You'll work primarily in TypeScript across frontend and backend, making key architectural decisions about the CLI's future direction and shaping how developers interact with AI tools in their daily work.
In this role, you'll own the full lifecycle of Duo CLI features—from problem definition with Product through implementation, rollout, and iteration. You'll build interactive terminal experiences with careful command and flag design, clear output formatting, scripting-friendly behavior, and backward compatibility. You'll drive reliability, observability, and performance improvements, measuring success through usage metrics and reducing technical debt as the product scales.
You'll provide technical leadership by breaking down complex problems, aligning on long-term direction, and maintaining high standards for code quality and reliability. Collaboration is central: you'll work closely with engineers across Developer Clients (JetBrains plugin, VS Code extension) and the wider AI Clients stage, including the Duo Client SDK and Duo Chat groups, to ensure GitLab Duo is fast, intuitive, and deeply integrated wherever developers work.
You'll champion product quality and developer experience through thoughtful code reviews and mentorship, and contribute to IDE extension work when useful, including Kotlin (JetBrains) and TypeScript (VS Code) projects.
Required: strong TypeScript proficiency and genuine interest in developer tooling and CLI design. You should have hands-on experience building or maintaining command-line tools, with deep understanding of command/flag design, terminal UIs, output formatting, and backward compatibility. You'll need proven ability to own technical problems end-to-end, make sound architectural trade-offs, and guide other engineers. Clear written and spoken English and comfort in fully remote, asynchronous environments are essential.
