Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering petabytes of empirical data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. The Storage team builds and expands the core object and metadata storage platform underpinning the company's data infrastructure, providing horizontally scalable architecture for data lifecycle management, indexing, search, and day-2 operations at massive scale. You'll join as a Senior Software Engineer to evolve this platform, working across the full stack from object storage and metadata indexing to event notification and disaster recovery. This role combines individual technical depth with mentorship and architectural influence. You'll own full service responsibility including performance measurement, alerting, on-call rotation, and incident response. You'll act as an advisor to other engineers, lead project teams, contribute to technical roadmap decisions, and help shape the architectural direction of storage systems handling petabytes of satellite imagery. Key responsibilities include building and maintaining systems for efficient data access, extending internal search and image processing services, operating and tuning Elasticsearch indexing, determining methods for complex assignments, leading lower-level engineers, participating in design reviews, and driving technical alignment. You bring 6–8 years of software engineering experience with demonstrated production backend service development in Go, Python, or similar modern languages. You're fluent with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Copilot) as part of daily workflow. You have hands-on experience monitoring and operating highly scalable cloud-native software, working with both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational datastores (BigTable, Elasticsearch), and building highly available, consistently performant services. You communicate excellently in remote settings, improve codebases and documentation through contributions beyond features, exercise sound judgment in technical selection, advise team members on complex matters, and analyze distributed backend service issues deeply. Standout qualifications include 6+ years Go or Python production experience, Kubernetes and Terraform infrastructure maintenance, AWS or GCP cloud experience, and prior work with geospatial data.
