Office Hours is a hyper-growth, profitable expert network platform that connects organizations with trusted experts across knowledge domains. The company is backed by top marketplace investors and operators from DoorDash, Airbnb, and Affirm, with headquarters in San Francisco and offices in Brooklyn and Bangalore.
You'll own the search, discovery, and recommendations stack end-to-end—from underlying data and indices to relevance, ranking, and user-facing experiences. This is a backend-leaning, full-stack role with real influence over architecture and product direction.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning search, discovery, and recommendations across the entire stack, from data/indices to relevance and ranking
- Building and improving backend services and APIs that power expert-to-opportunity matching
- Transforming fragmented, unstructured data into structured, searchable knowledge through reliable ingestion and indexing pipelines
- Shipping user-facing search and discovery features across the stack in partnership with product and design
- Raising the bar on architecture, code quality, and observability as the platform scales
- Exploring AI and LLM-assisted approaches to discovery (retrieval, embeddings, ranking, agentic workflows) and bringing promising solutions to production
You bring 6+ years of software engineering experience with strong backend fundamentals and comfort working across the stack. You have a track record of shipping high-quality products at scale and experience with search, discovery, recommendations, or data-intensive systems. You're a self-starter who can turn ambiguous problems into clean, scalable, well-tested solutions and wants to own a domain end-to-end.
Bonus experience includes deep knowledge of search relevance and ranking, recommendation systems at scale, vector/semantic search, knowledge graphs, LLM integration in production, and data-intensive event-driven systems.
Tech stack: Node.js, TypeScript, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform. The role is San Francisco-based preferred (2-3 days/week in office) but open to fully remote for the right candidate.
