Salary: USD 160,650 - 217,350 / annual
Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform serving millions of developers globally. The Navigation team develops and operates web services powering Mapbox's strategic navigation initiatives across consumer, automotive, and logistics sectors. This role focuses on designing, developing, and operating significant areas of Mapbox's routing services—the core engine that powers navigation experiences.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Routing Engine team, you will own complex technical challenges in routing optimization and delivery. Your responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing large-scale, high-volume, low-latency backend services handling millions of routing requests
- Solving complex routing scenarios that lack existing solutions, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in navigation
- Developing best-in-class routing experiences that are intuitive and performant rather than generic
- Building highly customizable routing solutions serving both large OEMs and niche customers with unique requirements
- Creating tools and infrastructure that enable other teams to unlock innovative mapping and navigation solutions
- Operating and maintaining distributed systems on AWS with focus on reliability, fault-tolerance, and consistency
You will work across a multidisciplinary team spanning distributed systems, geospatial localization, traffic telemetry, and mapping. The role requires deep expertise in backend systems, cloud infrastructure, and modern development practices.
Required qualifications: 5+ years building large-scale, low-latency backend services; 3+ years with Rust or Go in commercial or open-source environments; strong AWS cloud infrastructure knowledge (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM) with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD; solid understanding of operating systems and distributed systems principles; familiarity with modern AI development tools and practices.
Nice-to-have: modern C++ experience, geospatial or navigation domain expertise.
