Gusto is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Risk Engineering team, which builds core platform capabilities for fraud prevention, credit underwriting, and collections. You'll lead well-scoped, sometimes technically complex projects end-to-end—from technical design through rollout—partnering with product, design, data, and operations teams.
Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and building infrastructure that enables the Risk team to create custom-tailored experiences for fraud prevention and credit products; leading projects from conception through deployment; scaling one of the world's largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications; serving as a domain expert on Risk platform capabilities; mentoring junior engineers; managing stakeholder expectations on timelines; identifying and executing technical debt improvements; participating in on-call rotations for reliability and security incidents; and improving team productivity through better tools, patterns, and documentation.
You'll need 8+ years of software development experience, with demonstrated ability to design and build production-quality code and architecture for complex projects. Experience owning projects end-to-end while coordinating cross-functional partners is essential. You should be comfortable setting technical direction, making tradeoffs between competing priorities, and bringing clarity to ambiguous problems. Strong communication skills, ability to work in collaborative test-driven environments, and experience building fault-tolerant, reliable software are required. The role also expects fluency with AI tools to accelerate development, testing, and documentation.
Gusto supports over 500,000 small businesses with payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR services. The company offers competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) for all full-time employees. Teams are based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York.
