Flock is an AI-first insurance technology company transforming fleet insurance through real-time, data-driven risk assessment and pricing. With over £50M in funding and partnerships with major fleet operators (Amazon, DPD, Uber, Bolt), Flock is building the leading insurance platform for connected and autonomous vehicles.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Retain team, you will own core backend services that help fleet customers understand Flock's value, integrate it into their daily operations, and run safer, more profitable fleets. You'll take end-to-end ownership of critical systems—from design and architecture through production deployment and impact measurement.
Key responsibilities include:
**Core Technical Ownership**: Design, build, and operate high-quality backend services using TypeScript and PostgreSQL. Own schema design, SQL optimization, and production delivery. Make pragmatic architectural decisions for AWS-based systems (SQS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, EventBridge, CloudWatch), balancing scalability, reliability, and cost.
**Architecture & Platform**: Drive technical decisions for distributed, serverless systems. Introduce patterns and practices that improve maintainability, observability, and operational excellence. Use infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CDK) to provision and manage resources.
**Cross-functional Impact**: Partner with product, data, and commercial teams to translate business needs into technical scope. Define success metrics, guide trade-offs, and deliver measurable customer outcomes. Work closely with product managers to scope and deliver impactful features.
**Engineering Excellence & Mentorship**: Lead by example through code quality, design discussions, and code reviews. Mentor engineers through pairing and practical feedback. Establish standards for testing, CI/CD, type-safe APIs, and functional programming patterns. Shape how the team applies AI tools and coding agents across the telemetry pipeline—from data quality to customer insights.
**AI-Native Development**: Use AI coding tools and agents as a core part of your workflow. Help shape AI adoption across the engineering organization, from design exploration to testing and operational tooling.
You'll work in an agile environment with daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Success is measured by lasting impact on customers and the engineering team, not output alone.
