With over £50M raised and insuring hundreds of UK fleets including Amazon, DPD, Uber, and Bolt, Flock is building toward becoming the leading insurance platform for connected and autonomous vehicles.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Retain team, you will own core backend services that help fleet customers understand Flock's value, integrate it into daily operations, and run safer, more profitable fleets. This is a senior individual contributor role with significant technical leadership responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
• Senior ownership of critical backend services: lead design, build, and operation of core systems; write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript; design and manage PostgreSQL schemas; own production delivery.
• Architecture and platform decisions: drive scalable, reliable, and cost-effective AWS infrastructure (SQS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, EventBridge, CloudWatch); make pragmatic trade-offs; introduce patterns that improve maintainability and operability; use infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/CDK).
• Cross-functional collaboration: work closely with product, data, and commercial teams to translate business needs into technical scope; define success metrics; guide trade-offs for measurable customer impact.
• Engineering excellence and mentorship: lead by example through code and design discussions; mentor and pair with engineers; champion practical testing, CI/CD, type-safe APIs, and functional programming patterns; shape long-term technical direction.
• AI integration: use AI coding tools and agents as a standard part of your workflow; help shape how AI is applied across the telemetry pipeline, from data quality checks to customer-facing insights.
• API-driven development: integrate with and contribute to RESTful APIs; collaborate on APIs that efficiently serve data-intensive views.
You will own problems end-to-end, from design and build through deployment and impact measurement. You'll work in an agile environment with daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, collaborating closely with product managers and fellow engineers.
Essential qualifications: hands-on production experience building services in TypeScript with strong PostgreSQL skills (schema, SQL, indexing, performance, migrations); experience designing and operating distributed services in AWS with pragmatic scalability and reliability trade-offs; thoughtful approach to testing and the full development lifecycle; comfort collaborating with product and business stakeholders; ability to define and track success metrics; hands-on use of AI coding tools with clear judgment about their application.
Preferred: awareness of architectural approaches in serverless environments and layered architecture; understanding of how infrastructure and application layers optimize solutions; knowledge of functional programming concepts; experience with SQS and EventBridge.
