Cloudflare is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the R2 Gateway team, which owns the request-facing layer of R2, Cloudflare's object storage platform. R2 provides developers with durable, reliable storage with zero egress fees, integrated seamlessly with Cloudflare's global network and Developer Platform.
The R2 Gateway team is responsible for the S3-compatible API gateway that handles every object operation (put, get, list, delete). You will work on systems that manage authentication, request routing, rate limiting, and coordination between clients and R2's storage and metadata layers, all while maintaining strict S3 API compatibility and delivering low-latency, highly available access at global scale.
Key responsibilities include designing and implementing the S3-compatible API gateway serving every R2 operation; building and operating production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes handling high-throughput traffic; owning the request path end-to-end (authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, error handling); driving projects from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production monitoring; continuously improving reliability, performance, and observability; participating in on-call rotations and incident resolution; leveraging AI tools to accelerate development and operations; and collaborating across teams on API contracts and capacity planning.
Desirable qualifications include strong programming skills in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages; experience building or operating large-scale distributed systems with strict latency and reliability requirements; familiarity with cloud infrastructure (object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, service-oriented architectures); experience designing and operating high-throughput APIs; understanding of reliability and observability practices; strong communication skills; comfort with AI coding tools; and experience with S3 API, Cloudflare Workers, Durable Objects, or edge computing platforms.
