You will join Astronomer's open-source engineering team, focused on implementing new Airflow features and components. Your work will directly shape Apache Airflow, the de facto standard for data orchestration, and impact thousands of developers and data practitioners globally.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing new Airflow features and components
- Improving performance and resiliency of the Airflow platform
- Iterating on and enhancing Airflow's developer experience
- Improving code quality, test coverage, and reducing test runtime
- Engaging with the Apache Airflow open-source community via Slack, mailing lists, and GitHub
- Collaborating closely with team members to deliver high-quality results
- Liaising with customers to troubleshoot issues and provide solutions
- Contributing to the broader Airflow ecosystem and stewarding the open-source community
- Promoting new Airflow features at conferences and events
You will work in a remote, distributed environment with a strong emphasis on knowledge sharing and cross-team collaboration. The role offers direct engagement with developers and committers from the Apache Airflow project, a thriving open-source community with thousands of contributors worldwide.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of proven experience as a Python developer
- Demonstrated ability to think creatively and explore new ideas
- Experience troubleshooting complex issues
- Strong knowledge of building scalable and distributed systems
- Proactive approach to learning and staying updated with industry trends
- Strong unit testing skills and appreciation for automated testing practices
- Excellent communication skills across multiple mediums (GitHub, Slack, Zoom, email, pair programming)
- Ability to collaborate effectively, listen actively, share information, and provide constructive feedback
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Production experience with Apache Airflow
- Data engineering background
- Open source project contributions
- Kubernetes and Docker knowledge
- CI/CD pipeline design and maintenance experience
- Experience with Claude Code or similar agentic tooling
