Alan is a prevention-focused health insurance company serving 1M+ members across Europe, integrating insurance, prevention, and care into a unified platform. The company has reached €800M+ ARR and operates with 800+ employees across France, Spain, Belgium, and Canada.
You will join the Data Foundations crew within Tech Foundations, a platform engineering team that enables product crews across Alan to build and operate with world-class infrastructure, security, and developer experience. The Data Foundations team owns the privacy platform—specifically the GDPR Orchestrator—and ensures data lifecycle management (retention, deletion, anonymization, pseudonymization) is built in by design across all of Alan's 15+ product areas.
In this role, you will:
1. Own and evolve the privacy platform: design and maintain the core engine, safety mechanisms (preview/dry-run, audit trail), and operational health (deploys, on-call, observability). You will define the contract that other teams build on and keep it reliable as adoption scales.
2. Build the paved road: create documentation, templates, and self-serve tooling so any product area can plug into the platform and manage its own data rules and dependencies. You will coach teams through pairing and syncs, building capability rather than doing the work for them.
3. Coordinate across areas: align legal, security, data, and product teams on requirements, surface cross-area data dependencies, and resolve design trade-offs. You own the coordination while each area remains accountable for its own data and rules.
4. Push foundations forward: drive open platform design questions to conclusion and grow the platform's capabilities as Alan's data, products, and footprint expand.
For 2026, priorities include: becoming the long-term owner of the GDPR Orchestrator and shaping its roadmap; raising the bar on safety, observability, and developer experience; shipping docs and tooling for self-service adoption; and scaling the platform across new data stores and third-party systems.
The tech stack includes Python/Flask, TypeScript, React, React Native, AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, Redis, Terraform/Terramate, Datadog, Cloudflare, and GitHub Actions in a monorepo. The team deploys daily and believes in distributed ownership—you build it, you own it.
You are hands-on: writing code (primarily Python and TypeScript) is the bulk of the job. You ship what you write to production yourself, then operate it through rollouts, alerting, on-call, and incident response. You treat platform engineering as product work, with engineers and members as your customers. You design and communicate as comfortably as you code—writing framing docs, drawing dependency maps, and aligning multiple areas on design decisions. You measure impact by how fast areas can run their own data rules without consulting you. You build reusable patterns, guardrails, and safe-by-default abstractions that keep data handling correct at scale.
You operate across many teams and influence without authoritarianism, getting legal, security, data, and product crews (who don't report to you) aligned on a plan and driving it to completion. You bring pragmatism under constraint, shipping sound, safe solutions and improving them over time rather than waiting for perfect.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Senior-level experience (typically 8+ years) in backend or platform software engineering, or equivalent, with deep production ownership (API and contract design, data modeling, running what you ship).
- You've built and operated platforms, libraries, or services that other engineers depend on, and you care about the contract you expose to them.
- You're comfortable operating across many teams and influencing without authoritarianism: getting legal, security, data, and product crews who don't report to you aligned on a plan, and driving it to completion.
- You bring pragmatism under constraint: you ship sound, safe solutions and improve them over time, rather than waiting for perfect.
- Strong plus: prior privacy, GDPR, or data-governance exposure, and experience working in an enabling or platform-team operating model.
- Explicitly not required: deep legal expertise. Legal and security partner with this role; they don't get replaced by it.
- Fluent in English (French not required).
- Must be legally eligible to work in France, Belgium, or Spain.
