Salary: EUR 105,000 - 175,000 / annual
Astronomer is the company behind Astro, a unified DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow, trusted by over 800 leading enterprises globally. The Platform Engineering team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to shape how the company builds, tests, and deploys production infrastructure at scale.
In this role, you will own critical aspects of the platform's reliability and operational excellence. You'll make high-quality, data-driven decisions on production system design and directly influence how global organizations orchestrate data pipelines. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, building, and maintaining testing, build, and deployment systems in a high-scale PaaS environment
- Collaborating across the organization to design production systems, establish standards, and make technology choices for new and existing products
- Delivering reliable results in a fast-moving environment, safely evolving systems while maintaining stability
- Leading the Platform/Reliability practice as part of a small but growing team
- Participating in incident management and determining operational best practices
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive internal documentation for systems and processes
- Being directly involved in decision-making about what the team works on and how
You'll work on infrastructure challenges at the intersection of cloud-native systems, open-source software, and large-scale data orchestration. The role involves periodic on-call responsibilities for owned services.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong experience in non-abstract systems design and implementation
- Strong proficiency in Python and Golang with in-depth Kubernetes experience (CKA or equivalent or greater)
- Experience with observability principles and technologies, including SLI/SLO definition and tracking
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience in globally distributed teams
- Passion for reliability and operational excellence; low tolerance for toil
- Ability to accurately estimate scope of work and coordinate with stakeholders to manage risks
- Experience with software development best practices: code review, testing, CI/CD, version control, automation, debugging
- Proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues with focus on ownership and accountability
BONUS EXPERIENCE:
- SaaS/PaaS product experience across multiple cloud providers
- Familiarity with CircleCI, Chronosphere (Prometheus), Splunk, Bazel, Istio, Playwright, Karpenter, Github Actions
- Deep knowledge of AWS, GCP, and particularly Azure
- On-call rotation participation
- Apache Airflow experience
