Halter is a venture-backed agtech company transforming grazing management for farmers and graziers. The company uses hardware, software, and AI to enable sustainable, productive operations—allowing farmers to manage large herds (e.g., 500 cattle) without traditional infrastructure like quad bikes, dogs, or fences.
You will be the first software engineer on a new product vertical that extends Halter's capabilities beyond its current collar-based system into a new class of problems for farmers. This is a 0-to-1 opportunity with genuine ownership of architecture, stack, tooling, and engineering standards from day one. Early experiments are already running on farm.
Key responsibilities:
- Full-stack development: Build and own core product features end-to-end, from backend infrastructure to frontend experiences, with a bias toward shipping fast and iterating.
- Architecture ownership: Establish foundational patterns and technical decisions that will scale. You'll be the codebase authority and shape engineering culture.
- AI-native development: Use AI tools daily for architecting, building, and debugging across stacks. The company expects power-user proficiency with modern AI development tools.
- Field validation: Get out on farm regularly to prove concepts quickly, build scrappy prototypes, run experiments, and develop what works.
The role sits at the intersection of hardware, software, AI, and real-world farm operations. It's hard, physical, and hasn't been done before. You'll move fast, iterate ruthlessly, and take a product from experiment to something farmers rely on.
Halter is backed by Tier 1 investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, BOND, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, and others. The company is office-first (based in Auckland) with a high-trust culture and a team known for out-thinking, out-working, and out-caring.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Full-stack or backend coding excellence; capability and potential prioritized over years of experience.
- Customer obsession, impact focus, intellectual curiosity, and execution speed.
- Bias to action and drive for continuous learning.
- Low ego, high ownership; willingness to pick up whatever needs doing (debugging, data labeling, etc.).
- Comfort with ambiguity and collaborative long-term mindset.
- Daily proficiency with AI tools for architecting, building, and debugging across stacks.
- Ability to frequently travel to customer farms.
