Airwallex is a unified payments and financial platform serving over 250,000 global businesses including Brex, Navan, Qantas, and SHEIN. The company operates across 27 offices worldwide with 2,300+ employees and is valued at $11 billion, backed by leading investors including Sequoia, Visa, and Mastercard.
The Notification Platform engineering team builds and operates core infrastructure powering customer and internal communications across Airwallex. This centralized platform team delivers notifications reliably at scale across multiple channels (SMS, Email, Push, WhatsApp, inbox), enabling product teams to engage users with timely, targeted messaging.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a strong individual contributor taking ownership of complex components and delivering high-quality systems. You will design, develop, and maintain a resilient, high-throughput, low-latency notification platform using event-driven architecture. Key responsibilities include maintaining architectural standards through modern design patterns (reactive programming, workflow orchestration, distributed systems), identifying opportunities to expand channel capabilities, engaging cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Design teams across global offices, troubleshooting production issues across the stack, and collaborating closely with the Issuing Platform team (Airwallex Cards & Transactions).
You bring 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong capabilities in modern languages (Java, Python, Go) and deep expertise in large-scale, low-latency, high-throughput systems. You have at least 3 years building distributed systems using middleware like Kafka and PostgreSQL, with hands-on experience managing and tuning event pipelines. You're proficient in Java memory management, multi-threading, high concurrency, IO/NIO, and network communication. Preferred qualifications include experience with distributed databases (PostgreSQL, Redis, NoSQL), messaging patterns, resilience design, full Kafka implementation, and broader interests in design systems, search, AI, gateway technologies, and data analytics. You're motivated by technical execution, sound design decisions, and raising team quality through example and collaboration.
