Instacart's Marketing Enablement & Technology (MET) team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to architect and scale backend services and ETL processes powering the company's Paid Marketing channels—a core growth lever. You'll work at the intersection of Marketing, Product, and Engineering, owning platforms behind campaign feeds, audience targeting, event pipelines, and QA automation across Paid Social, Display, SEM, Online Video, Linear Television, and Streaming Audio.
In this role, you'll lead complete projects end-to-end, defining experimentation, development, and rollout strategies with minimal guidance. You'll architect scalable, robust solutions for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency, handling high-throughput marketing operations. Key responsibilities include designing backend services and APIs, building data pipelines using tools like Snowflake, SQL, Airflow, and DBT, and implementing comprehensive observability solutions (logging, metrics, tracing).
You'll partner directly with Marketing and Product stakeholders to influence features and requirements, bringing strong technical perspective while making well-reasoned trade-offs between complexity, business value, and delivery timelines. Mentoring junior engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and onboarding is an important part of the role, as is contributing to team productivity through process improvements and automation.
Required qualifications include 5–8 years of software engineering experience with expert-level Python proficiency for building scalable backend services, APIs, and data pipelines. You'll need a proven track record of leading complete projects end-to-end, including architecture design, implementation, experimentation, and production rollout. Deep expertise with data integration technologies (Snowflake, SQL, ETL processes) and workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, DBT) is essential, along with demonstrated ability to design for performance, scalability, and robustness with comprehensive observability solutions.
Strong product thinking is critical—you should be able to research problems deeply, influence product direction, and make strategic trade-offs balancing technical and business considerations. Excellent communication skills and proven ability to mentor engineers, drive cross-team alignment, and translate technical concepts for diverse stakeholders are required.
Preferred qualifications include experience architecting automation frameworks and reusable abstractions, advanced knowledge of ad platform APIs (Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Snapchat Ads) and conversion tracking at scale, deep understanding of digital marketing operations and performance marketing KPIs (ROAS, LTV, CAC, CPA), cloud cost optimization, chaos engineering, disaster recovery planning, and strategic technical debt management. Experience with security-by-design principles, incident response leadership, and leveraging AI tools for productivity improvements is also valued.
