Sofar Ocean is building the world's largest privately owned network of marine weather sensors and ocean intelligence platform. This Senior Software Engineer role focuses on maritime route optimization, vessel performance modeling, and voyage analysis for U.S. Government and Department of Defense customers.
You'll work on hands-on software engineering problems including maritime voyage optimization and route evaluation, vessel performance and fuel-consumption modeling across varying operating and environmental conditions, optimization algorithms and supporting software, simulation and evaluation capabilities, and clear, explainable results for users to understand optimization recommendations.
The role involves balancing competing considerations: fuel consumption, transit time, vessel performance, environmental conditions, voyage constraints, and operational needs. You'll collaborate with engineers, product experts, and maritime domain specialists to translate real-world problems into practical software solutions.
The optimization, modeling, and simulation software stack includes Rust and Python. You may work across both high- and low-level languages while contributing to algorithms, models, services, APIs, testing, and related software components.
Required qualifications: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, strong software engineering fundamentals with production software contributions, experience with Python and/or compiled languages (Rust, C++, C), comfort with algorithms and computational problems, ability to translate domain/mathematical concepts into maintainable software, strong communication skills, and comfort supporting U.S. Government and DoD customers. U.S. citizenship required; must pass background check.
Bonus experience includes physics or related technical degree, optimization/modeling/simulation software development, maritime/naval domain knowledge, prior DoD customer support, or personal connection to oceans. Maritime route optimization experience is not required; relevant background may come from robotics, logistics, aerospace, autonomy, transportation, scientific computing, operations research, or simulation domains.
