Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the k6 Core team. k6 is an open-source performance and reliability testing tool used by developers and QA engineers worldwide. The k6 project is part of the Grafana observability ecosystem and serves over 35 million users across 7,000+ customers including Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce.
In this role, you will work on the k6 codebase (written in Go), taking features and improvements from initial concept through implementation and delivery. Much of the work involves problems that are not fully specified upfront, requiring you to understand context, evaluate trade-offs, and select sound technical approaches. You will work with high independence while collaborating closely with other engineers on design, implementation, and code reviews.
Responsibilities include delivering production-quality code, maintaining existing functionality, ensuring system reliability and maintainability, and contributing to the open-source project and community. Some work may involve the k6 Cloud offering, which runs distributed tests across global data centers using Go services that require careful attention to performance, correctness, and failure modes.
The team is small, so your work will have direct, visible impact on the product and its users. You will work alongside experienced engineers in an environment that values clarity, pragmatism, and sound engineering judgment. The company invests heavily in developer productivity, providing access to modern AI coding assistants (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) with company-funded usage budgets to support rapid iteration.
Work is asynchronous by default, with decisions captured in pull requests and design notes. Meetings focus on alignment rather than status updates. The team releases on a regular cadence of approximately every six weeks, with a focus on small, safe, incremental changes between releases. Code reviews emphasize correctness, long-term maintainability, and user impact.
