Astronomer is seeking a Senior or Staff Software Engineer to join its Infrastructure team, responsible for designing and owning the architecture of systems that manage the infrastructure underlying Apache Airflow. You'll work on both Astronomer's multi-tenant cloud platform (Astro) and Astro Private Cloud, a self-hosted distribution for regulated organizations. In this role, you will design and build control-plane services and APIs that drive infrastructure lifecycle management, ensuring reliable operation across diverse network topologies—from standard private cloud to zero-egress, air-gapped environments. You'll own the technical direction and implementation of key platform areas, mentor junior engineers, and raise engineering standards across the team. Key responsibilities include: - Designing and owning end-to-end architecture for infrastructure provisioning, scaling, and management systems - Designing and evolving REST/gRPC APIs that power customer-facing UIs and programmatic integrations, with attention to data modeling, versioning, and backward compatibility - Owning the networking and security posture, including authentication, authorization, secure communication, CVE remediation, image hardening, and Pod Security Standards compliance - Architecting observability and distributed tracing across the stack (metrics, logs, traces) to enable end-to-end request tracking - Participating in on-call rotation for incident diagnosis, resolution, and post-mortems - Mentoring engineers and driving improvements in design, code review, testing, and operational rigor You should bring 5+ years (8+ for Staff level) of infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering experience with a proven track record managing production systems at scale. Deep hands-on expertise with Kubernetes (custom Operators/CRDs, Helm-based deployments), API design (REST/gRPC), and strong systems fundamentals in networking, distributed systems, reliability, and security are essential. Proficiency in Go and/or TypeScript is required. Experience designing observability and distributed tracing for multi-layer systems, leading technical design across teams, and mentoring engineers is expected. Nice-to-have qualifications include experience with multi-tenant control planes, shipping software into air-gapped or regulated environments (finance, healthcare, government), familiarity with Apache Airflow internals, and incident command or on-call leadership experience.
