Honeycomb is a Series D-funded observability platform serving companies like Slack, HelloFresh, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard. The Storage Team is the backbone of the platform, responsible for the performance, reliability, and scalability of storing and querying billions of events.
As a Senior Software Engineer II on the Storage team, you will design and implement solutions powering Honeycomb's query and data storage infrastructure. You'll work on high-impact systems including query performance optimization, the Retriever service, and storage layer reliability. Your work enables every product experience from Metrics to Triggers and SLOs, though customers may never see your code directly—they rely on it every time they use Honeycomb.
Key responsibilities include: designing and delivering high-quality solutions for storage and querying infrastructure; scoping and delivering complex projects independently from design through production support; collaborating with Product Management and cross-functional engineering teams to connect technical solutions to product needs; participating in on-call rotations and owning the software you build; exploring new technologies and data storage techniques to maintain performance at scale; and mentoring teammates through code reviews and knowledge sharing.
You bring technical leadership in storage and querying systems with expertise in Go and experience with high-throughput or complex systems. Database engineering experience and Kubernetes familiarity are valued. You're curious, learn by digging in, and tie technical decisions to customer and business impact. You excel at mentorship, guide engineers through code reviews, and help spread knowledge across diverse teams. The company is fully distributed, emphasizing trust, autonomy, and accountability from day one.
