Coder is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer for its Enterprise Experience team to build production-grade systems that help large organizations run Coder securely and reliably. You'll design and implement backend architecture changes supporting scalability, investigate production bottlenecks, improve database migration safety, and own the backend side of operator-facing issues. The role is genuinely cross-functional, partnering with platform and QA engineers to solve complex problems end-to-end, from technical design through production rollout.
You'll work on Go-based backend services (Postgres, GCP, Kubernetes, gRPC), participate in RFC-style design discussions, code reviews, and on-call rotations. Key responsibilities include designing new features, evolving Coder's architecture for long-term scalability, investigating and resolving scalability bottlenecks under production-like load, improving database migration safety and upgrade reliability through schema compatibility and safe rollback strategies, and documenting design and operational tradeoffs.
Required: 5+ years professional software engineering experience with significant production Go work; deep understanding of Go's concurrency model (goroutines, channels, sync package, race condition debugging); experience designing and operating relational databases in production (schema design, migrations, transactions); strong verbal and written communication; exceptional debugging and troubleshooting skills; self-motivated, analytical mindset.
