Nautilus Biotechnology is developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform to democratize access to the proteome and accelerate drug development. This Senior Software Engineer II role is central to the reliability of the company's instrument platform.
You will own and deliver critical capabilities within the Instrument Software stack, including hardware orchestration, instrument performance measurement, telemetry warehousing, and integration with downstream bioinformatics systems. You'll collaborate closely with hardware engineers and integration scientists to develop tools for validating instrument performance during bring-up and ensuring product quality post-delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and delivering essential software to orchestrate hardware devices and monitor quality control data
- Developing tools to measure and validate instrument performance, including optics, fluidics, and mechanical systems
- Driving cross-functional decisions using custom analysis of multivariate sensor telemetry and QC data
- Creating diagnostic tools for rapid issue resolution with Operations and Technical Support teams
- Partnering with bioinformaticians, biologists, and product teams to understand how instrument performance impacts customer outcomes
- Leading with ownership: driving technical design, contributing to architecture decisions, and mentoring engineers through code review and technical dialogue
Required qualifications: 6+ years in high-performing software engineering organizations plus a 4-year degree (or equivalent); expertise in Python and C++; experience building software that reliably interfaces with hardware; CI/CD pipeline experience; data analysis skills; excellent cross-functional communication; demonstrated commitment to full lifecycle ownership (design, testing, observability, maintainability).
Desirable: optical systems experience (TDI cameras, hardware-controlled autofocus), classical image processing/computer vision algorithms, hardware test software or manufacturing line experience, biotech or startup background.
