Thought Machine is building modern banking infrastructure to replace legacy systems at global banks. The company has raised over £500m from top-tier investors including JPMorgan Chase, Standard Chartered, and Temasek, and operates offices in London, New York, Singapore, Sydney, and Lisbon.
As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will operate with significant technical influence across the organization. You own complex, highly ambiguous technical challenges end-to-end, handling unexpected hurdles independently. Your impact extends beyond individual team delivery—you drive systemic organizational change and shape the long-term technical direction of Thought Machine's platforms.
You will act as a crucial link between senior leadership, external stakeholders, and engineering teams, actively driving engineering and company principles while aligning with the broader codebase, architecture, and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership: Design and build solutions to highly complex problems using deep codebase and architecture knowledge. Lead the direction for future technical change. Define standards and engineering practices company-wide. Drive adoption of emerging technologies (e.g., AI tools) to scale developer velocity and code quality. Keep pace with industry-leading software trends and introduce new tools and processes that shape the technical roadmap. Provide technical leadership through code review and peer guidance, ensuring work considers broader impact and strategic direction. Investigate complex production issues spanning multiple services, environments, and clusters, driving improvements to operational support processes. Lead technical interviews for senior engineering and leadership roles.
Product & Delivery: Own solutions to work items of undefined scope and high complexity end-to-end. Drive delivery requiring effective stakeholder management across larger milestones spanning multiple units or departments. Leverage deep product understanding to envision future solutions and contribute to product strategy, vision, and long-term roadmap.
Collaboration & Mentorship: Communicate seamlessly with stakeholders at all levels, managing leadership expectations while preserving engineering agility. Build consensus on complex, changing requirements. Inspire and empower others through guidance, knowledge sharing, and idea creation. Understand team capabilities to enable effective delegation and personal growth.
Requirements:
- Deep expertise in modern backend languages, ideally Go or Python
- Proven experience with large-scale, cloud-native systems
- Demonstrated technical leadership: champion of industry best practices, mentor to peers, driver of solutions to highly complex problems
- Extensive experience investigating complex issues across multiple environments, clusters, and products
- Proven ability to drive systemic improvements to operational and production support processes
- Exceptional problem-solving skills for highly complex, undefined-scope challenges
- Egoless collaboration mindset: receptive to new ideas, able to synthesize different approaches, focused on company and client outcomes
- Exceptional communication skills with capability to provide leadership across diverse stakeholders and drive organizational change
