You will join the Identity and Access Management team, which owns DeepL's full identity stack: organisation, account and session management, SSO federation, SCIM provisioning, and the OIDC provider for both internal and external users. This is the foundation every DeepL product relies on to authenticate and authorise users securely and at scale. The team is shifting from "Software-First" to "Product-First," hiring Missionaries—builders who obsess over the Why before the How.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the Identity Experience End-to-End: Architect and build complex, user-facing features across the identity stack. Own business-critical systems from problem definition through architectural design, deployment, and production reliability, measuring success by user impact.
- Build for "Consumer-Grade" Enterprise: Ensure authentication and authorization systems cannot fail. Build for reliability and maintainability while delivering user-friendly experiences. Lead incident response and continuously raise the bar on code quality and operational health.
- Collaborate to Raise the Bar: Work closely with teammates across Identity and adjacent teams—product teams, Product Management, and Support. Lead designs, scoping, shaping, and solving hard product and technical challenges.
- Drive Technical Pragmatism: Choose technology that solves customer problems most effectively, ensuring long-term maintainability. Use AI for boilerplate code, test generation, and debugging to focus cognitive energy on high-value architectural decisions.
Work Environment:
Hybrid role based in London with team members coming into the office twice a week. DeepL operates a Unified Engineering Pipeline and may match you to the highest-priority role that fits your skillset across Core Product, Platform, Voice, or Enterprise teams. Requirements:
- Deep expertise designing scalable backend systems and distributed architectures; proven experience with high-scale distributed systems in production.
- Strong system design fundamentals; understanding of failure modes, system boundaries, and code impact at scale.
- Backend mastery in C# / .NET Core (approximately 80-90% of work is backend; React/Javascript frontend experience is a welcome plus, not required).
- Extreme ownership and operational excellence: own services end-to-end including production operations, incident response, and on-call responsibilities. Motivated by pushing reliability toward four nines.
- Enterprise domain curiosity: interested in hard problems of B2B SaaS Identity—authentication (SSO/OIDC), authorization, security, and auditing. Understand these as pillars of trust for enterprise clients.
- AI-native velocity: leverage AI-powered tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude) to accelerate velocity and eliminate repetitive toil.
- System thinker mindset: understand not just syntax but failure modes and how code impacts broader architecture at scale.
