Salary: USD 200,000 - 280,000 / annual
Astranis builds advanced satellites for high orbits, serving large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the US military. The company operates five satellites on orbit with a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts. As a Senior Software Engineer - Flight Software, you will take ownership of architecture and high-level design decisions for the flight software that commands and monitors spacecraft. Your responsibilities include developing software for the flight computer and firmware for control boards, improving reliability through requirements generation, continuous integration, automated testing, and code reviews. You will collaborate across multiple teams including avionics, ground control, and telemetry to ensure seamless integration. The role involves developing in modern C++ to interface with flight computers and custom hardware, delivering complex projects through incremental development, and mentoring junior engineers.
You will contribute to both commercial and US Government programs, working on systems that demand high availability and reliability. The position requires 5-8+ years of experience developing software for products in modern C++ or C, familiarity with software development methodologies and design patterns, and experience with communication protocols (TCP/IP, I2C, SPI). Strong communication and written skills are essential, along with a passion for space technology and experience building high-reliability systems.
Bonus qualifications include embedded Linux/POSIX systems experience, Python proficiency, experience with VxWorks, Linux, FreeRTOS, or QNX environments, demonstrated production software shipping experience, safety-critical development background (FDA, FAA, automotive), and board bring-up and hardware-software integration expertise. The role is based at Astranis's 153,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Northern California, where the company designs, builds, and operates its satellites. U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or refugee/asylee status is required to comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations.
