Sofar Ocean is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work directly with U.S. Navy Fleet users, adapting and maturing Sofar's marine weather sensor technology for Government maritime workflows and systems. This is a hands-on role that bridges commercial product development with Government operational requirements.
You will work closely with Fleet Weather Center users in Norfolk, VA or San Diego, CA (hybrid, 2–3 days onsite per week) to understand existing routing and voyage-planning workflows, identify pain points, and translate observations into practical software improvements. The work spans user-facing application development, backend services, systems integration, and API interoperability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with Fleet Weather Center users to understand workflows and operational needs
- Developing and improving UI/UX for ship selection, voyage planning, route review, and route comparison
- Building clear presentation of route, weather, vessel, and voyage operational information
- Integrating Sofar technology with Government-provided systems, APIs, and data formats
- Prototyping workflow concepts with users and iterating based on real-world feedback
- Evaluating unfamiliar Government APIs, authentication mechanisms, and technical constraints
- Testing and troubleshooting software alongside Fleet users and Government engineering teams
- Supporting deployment and troubleshooting in classified Government research environments
The role is intentionally iterative: requirements often begin with observed workflows or operational problems rather than finished specifications. You'll help determine what should be built, develop it, validate it with users, and refine based on feedback.
You should be comfortable following problems across software boundaries (TypeScript/React frontends, Python backends, APIs, data integrations) to understand and solve them end-to-end. Strong visual and product sense is essential, as is the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Eligibility: U.S. citizenship required; active or recently active Secret security clearance required; must pass background check; must be willing to work onsite with Navy Fleet Weather Center users as needed.
