ThayerMahan is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their embedded systems team in Groton, Connecticut. This hybrid role reports to the Director of Software Engineering and focuses on developing software across web applications, embedded Linux, and microcontroller platforms. The work spans autonomous system command and control, digital signal processing, software build and configuration management, and data flow management.
As a senior engineer, you will own the full software development lifecycle: writing and reviewing code, creating and maintaining technical documentation, and developing design proposals. You'll work on incompletely specified tasks, communicating requirements and solution options to stakeholders. The role emphasizes mentorship of junior engineers and strong cross-functional collaboration.
Key responsibilities include exploring and updating existing codebases, designing and implementing new features, writing automated tests, and providing field engineering support for R&D, testing, and deployed systems. You'll research emerging technologies for potential adoption and communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required qualifications include U.S. citizenship (role requires access to Controlled Unclassified Information), a Bachelor's or Master's degree, and 8+ years of relevant industry experience. You must be able to obtain a DoD security clearance. Expertise in at least two programming languages is required; preferred languages include Python, C, C++, Rust, and Bash. Additional preferred skills include Git/GitLab, CI/CD, Linux, Docker, networking, and prior experience with DoD customers.
The hybrid arrangement requires 100% onsite presence during initial onboarding, then 2-3 days per week onsite at Groton HQ thereafter. Occasional travel for at-sea support or major client milestones is expected.
