Metropolis Technologies is building AI systems that make the real world responsive, pioneering what they call the Recognition Economy. The company transforms everyday experiences—starting with parking—into seamless, intelligent interactions by combining hardware, machine learning, and software infrastructure.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Advanced Technologies team, you will design and develop scalable backend systems that integrate cutting-edge hardware with machine learning models to understand real-world object behavior. You'll work across a modern distributed systems stack: Java, Scala, gRPC, Protobuf, Redis, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build robust, maintainable backend services in Java and Scala for mission-critical operations
- Design and implement high-performance gRPC APIs for real-time service-to-service communication
- Optimize data storage and retrieval using Redis and relational databases
- Deploy and manage microservices on Kubernetes, balancing scalability, resilience, and cost
- Architect event-driven systems using Kafka for real-time data streaming
- Partner with hardware, ML, and operations teams to ensure seamless ecosystem integration
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks while maintaining system reliability and data integrity
You bring 8+ years of backend development experience, ideally in platform or core services. You have proven expertise in Java and Scala, strong fundamentals in distributed systems, database design, container orchestration, and event streaming. You're analytical, collaborative, and comfortable working across technical disciplines. A CS/SE degree or equivalent is expected.
Metropolis operates on an office-first model requiring four days per week on-site in Seattle to foster collaboration and culture. The role offers competitive total compensation including base salary, healthcare, 401(k), disability coverage, life insurance, stock options, and bonus plans.
