Canva is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Developer Experience (DevX) group, specifically the Developer Environment team. This role focuses on building and maintaining critical infrastructure that directly impacts every engineer at Canva's organization.
You will own platforms powering how engineers develop at Canva, from cloud development environments to IDE tooling and AI-enabled workflows. The Developer Environment team's infrastructure touches thousands of engineers daily. Your work will span three potential domains depending on team placement:
**Automation Pipeline:** Build and maintain CI/CD systems, test infrastructure, release automation, and deployment safety mechanisms.
**Developer Workflows:** Optimize developer experience across the software development lifecycle, including local and remote developer environments, build system performance, IDE integrations, and AI-assisted development tooling.
**Build & Collaboration:** Maintain source control systems, monorepo tooling, build systems (Bazel), code review infrastructure, and developer environments.
Your focus will be on high-leverage projects that eliminate systemic friction—reducing build times, automating release processes, and building self-service platforms that empower teams to move faster independently.
Canva operates a hybrid model from its Sydney campus in Surry Hills, with flexibility to work remotely while collaborating in-person when it matters most.
**Requirements:**
- Strong background in Platform Engineering with solid programming experience in Python and Go (Java or TypeScript experience is a plus)
- Proven track record building and operating systems at scale
- Experience supporting large engineering organizations (1000+ engineers)
- Strong experience with AWS or GCP (Canva uses AWS)
- Thorough Kubernetes experience in production environments
- Experience building and maintaining complex CI/CD pipelines at scale (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Buildkite, etc.)
- Experience with Bazel, Gradle, or similar monorepo build tools (Bazel experience highly valued)
- Implemented comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting (observability)
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation)
**Highly Valued (Nice to Have):**
- Experience with release automation and deployment safety mechanisms
- Background in developer tooling
- Contributions to open source infrastructure or developer tools
- Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into developer workflows
- Prior work on build performance optimization or test infrastructure at scale
