The Database OEM team is a cross-cutting, highly visible group focused on delivering Aiven's database services (PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Valkey) to strategic, high-revenue partners. In this Senior Software Engineer role, you will design customer-specific solutions and drive enhancements across these three database services. The role requires excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to manage context across multiple high-value customers. Key responsibilities include writing high-quality, maintainable code; participating in technical discussions and code reviews; contributing to technical planning and backlog management; investigating and resolving customer issues; mentoring other engineers; automating repetitive processes; and improving the scalability, reliability, and operational quality of PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Valkey services. The team's core philosophy is to automate everything and eliminate manual work. Backend systems are primarily implemented in Python, with components in Java, Go, and C. Required qualifications: 5+ years of experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Valkey/Redis, or similar databases; excellent Python development skills; experience with backup solutions and strategies; advanced Linux OS knowledge; automated testing experience; distributed systems knowledge; experience with performance improvements, bug fixes, and security vulnerability resolution; understanding of white-labelling and multi-tenancy challenges; and fluent English (verbal and written). Nice-to-have skills include security expertise (software and networking) and experience in cloud DBaaS production environments. Aiven offers equity participation, hybrid work flexibility, equipment choice, professional development budgets, global employee assistance programs, and country-specific benefits.
