Instructure is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own the data platform behind its AI-powered learning features. You will design and operate the data models, storage architecture, APIs, and pipelines that support AI systems across relational, graph, and retrieval-oriented databases. This role bridges backend engineering and data infrastructure, focusing on systems where data structure and correctness are core challenges.
Key responsibilities include: designing and owning data models and storage architecture for AI systems; building and operating APIs, backend services, and data pipelines; designing reliable ingestion and update workflows with incremental processing and safe backfills; ensuring data correctness, query performance, and scalability as volume grows; turning prototypes into production-ready services and retrieval components; and diagnosing production issues to improve reliability and operational efficiency.
You will collaborate closely with data scientists and applied AI engineers who depend on your systems, and with the infrastructure team on deployment and operations. The role requires strong production experience with Python, SQL, relational databases, and AWS. You should have deep expertise in building reliable ingestion pipelines, designing production services with clear API contracts, and operating containerized services with CI/CD and monitoring tools. Experience with graph databases, bitemporal data systems, vector search, or multi-tenant data design is a plus.
Instructure offers competitive compensation with an ownership program, flexible work culture, generous time off including an annual recharge period in December, comprehensive wellness and mental health support, professional development resources, and a culture rooted in inclusivity. The role requires onsite collaboration on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Thursday strongly encouraged.
