Lightning AI is the company behind PyTorch Lightning, building an end-to-end platform for developing, training, and deploying AI systems. The Core Platform team builds foundational services that power every experience across Lightning AI—from authentication and APIs to multi-tenancy, resource management, and developer tooling.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Core Platform team, you'll design, build, and scale backend services that support researchers, startups, and enterprise AI teams as they build, train, and deploy AI applications. You'll work on critical infrastructure including authentication systems, resource management APIs, multi-tenant architecture, and developer workflows that every customer and engineering team depends on.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining scalable backend services; developing APIs and platform services supporting core platform capabilities; improving reliability, observability, scalability, and performance across infrastructure; partnering with product, infrastructure, and AI engineering teams to deliver new capabilities; evaluating and improving technical architecture and engineering processes; and mentoring engineers while establishing best practices.
You'll need extensive experience building scalable backend systems using Go, Python, Rust, or similar languages, with strong expertise in designing and operating distributed systems and cloud-native services. Experience building APIs and platform services that other engineers depend on is essential. Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, and modern cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) is required.
The role is based in San Francisco, New York, or London with a minimum of 2 in-office days per week and occasional team offsites. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
