Salary: USD 210,000 - 250,000 / annual
Astronomer is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Core Platform team, responsible for building and maintaining the foundational systems that power Astro, the industry-leading DataOps platform built on Apache Airflow. The Core Platform team owns critical infrastructure including the Public API, authentication, billing, alerting frameworks, and platform reliability/scalability.
In this role, you will contribute to the architecture and implementation of Astro's core systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams including frontend developers, product managers, and customers to understand requirements and deliver features. You'll work on both internal engineering infrastructure and customer-facing APIs, directly impacting how enterprises worldwide manage their data orchestration.
Key responsibilities include developing performant and scalable backend services, participating in architectural decisions, implementing features across the platform stack, and ensuring system reliability and maintainability. You'll have the opportunity to influence engineering practices across the organization and work on mission-critical systems serving 800+ enterprise customers.
Required qualifications include a proven track record building performant, scalable, and reliable backend systems. You should have strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset. Technical requirements include experience developing services in Go, working with Kubernetes and service orchestration, proficiency with SQL databases (Postgres preferred), and advanced understanding of distributed systems concepts. Experience rationally leveraging AI coding assistants and LLMs (Claude, Cursor, Gemini) to accelerate development is expected.
Bonus qualifications include open source contributions, experience with Apache Airflow or workflow orchestrators, and familiarity with critical business functions like billing and authentication systems.
