Starburst is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Control Plane team, responsible for converging the control planes of Starburst Enterprise Platform (self-managed) and Starburst Galaxy (fully managed SaaS) into a unified platform. You will design and build backend services and cloud infrastructure that operate at global scale across both multi-tenant SaaS and customer-operated on-premise/air-gapped deployments.
Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining control plane services shared across Starburst Enterprise, Starburst Galaxy, and Trino; contributing to the unified control plane by consolidating capabilities like access control, multi-cluster management, routing, catalog management, and observability into a single implementation; owning reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency of services you build; and building for two distinct operating models simultaneously—a service Starburst operates at scale and software customers deploy across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premise environments.
You will provide thoughtful code review and design feedback to peers, continuously improve engineering processes and testing infrastructure, collaborate with globally distributed teams in a fast-paced environment, and provide exceptional support for both internal and external customers. The role emphasizes focused work with minimal formal meetings, clear written communication (Slack, GitHub, design docs), and periodic assistance with the React/TypeScript Portal UI.
Required experience includes distributed systems development, extensive Java software development, cloud infrastructure architecture across major providers, building and operating backend services (APIs, control loops, lifecycle management), hands-on adoption of AI coding tools, software engineering best practices, and demonstrated ownership and bias for action.
