Coinbase is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Onboarding team, responsible for building and scaling backend systems that power user onboarding and KYC (Know Your Customer) workflows across all Coinbase products and markets globally. This role is critical to enabling Coinbase to launch in new countries, ship new products rapidly, and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements across jurisdictions.
You will own the design, development, and scaling of backend services written in Golang that handle onboarding and KYC workflows at global scale. Your responsibilities include building scalable, service-oriented systems using modern cloud infrastructure (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/GCP) and industry best practices to solve complex platform challenges. You'll drive measurable improvements to onboarding conversion funnels by identifying technical and product bottlenecks, then shipping data-informed solutions that impact user acquisition and retention.
Key responsibilities include partnering with engineers, product managers, designers, and senior leadership to translate product vision and technical strategy into quarterly execution roadmaps. You'll lead cross-cutting design reviews within your product area to ensure security, operational integrity, and architectural clarity across all shipped features. This is an individual contributor role focused on technical excellence and platform impact, not people management.
Required experience includes 5+ years building, scaling, and maintaining production backend services in service-oriented architectures. You must have a proven track record designing distributed systems that operate reliably at scale, with hands-on experience in cloud-native tooling. Proficiency in Golang or similar statically-typed languages is essential, along with demonstrated ability to write well-tested, production-grade code. You should have experience owning end-to-end delivery of platform capabilities from technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration. The role also values responsible use of generative AI to improve workflow efficiency while maintaining human oversight.
Coinbase is a remote-first but not remote-only company. Expect quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges" for intense collaborative work. The environment is high-intensity and mission-driven, focused on increasing economic freedom through cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
