Aurora Solar is building software that powers the design and deployment of residential and commercial solar arrays. The company has designed millions of solar projects and serves thousands of solar professionals globally. The System Design Pod is the core technical team responsible for the computation engines that enable accurate, high-fidelity solar design. This team owns the algorithms and systems powering load and utility bill modeling, whole-home electrification, PV and battery electrical design, and system performance simulation. The work sits at the intersection of software engineering and applied mathematics. As a Senior Software Engineer on the System Design Pod, you will lead technical features from discovery through release, propose new mathematical approaches to long-standing problems, and advance the simulation and optimization work for PV and storage design tools. You'll design and build backend systems and computation engines behind Aurora's solar and electrical design workflows, partner with product managers and research engineers to translate complex physical models into reliable software, and shape the architecture of the simulation and computation infrastructure to keep it correct, fast, and maintainable. You'll write clean, well-tested code, mentor teammates, participate in technical discussions and code reviews, and own services end-to-end including on-call rotation. The role offers significant impact: your work directly influences the accuracy and capability of solar design for thousands of installers and millions of homeowners. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong backend foundation - Academic background or equivalent skillset in computational mathematics, optimization, linear algebra, control theory, or numerical algorithms - Hands-on experience with simulation or optimization - Experience designing and building APIs, microservices, or data pipelines at scale - Sharp algorithmic thinking with ability to reason about performance, correctness, and edge cases in computational systems - Proficiency in one or more backend languages (C++, Python, Ruby, or other relevant languages) - Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain complex technical ideas and collaborate on distributed teams NICE TO HAVES: - Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computer science, applied math, electrical engineering, physics, or related field - Familiarity with solar PV and battery technology or electrical engineering concepts - Experience with cloud-native compute infrastructure and batch or distributed processing systems - Genuine interest in renewable energy and accelerating the energy transition - Track record of thriving when pace increases and problem space shifts
