Oscar Health is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Core Technology team, which builds and maintains the foundational platform supporting all Oscar engineering. The role focuses on cloud infrastructure and site reliability engineering (SRE), with responsibility for architecting resilient systems on AWS/GCP, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
You will become the domain expert on your team's technical areas including DevOps, site reliability, and cloud best practices. Key responsibilities include leading the planning and execution of complex technical projects across multiple teams, mentoring junior engineers, and independently owning large or complex technology capabilities. You'll work with partners, product managers, and designers to solve challenging problems, drive technical roadmap prioritization, and actively identify and reduce failure domains to build resilient systems.
The role emphasizes designing and building fault-tolerant, scalable software systems while minimizing business impact during maintenance and failures. You'll guide the development of Service-Level Objectives (SLOs) for systems you own, facilitate cross-team collaboration, and contribute to organization-wide projects. You report to a Staff/Senior Staff Engineer.
Required qualifications include 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with increasingly impactful accomplishments, demonstrated expertise in practical application of computer science concepts, and experience mentoring junior engineers. You should have a track record of leading technical contributions and setting standards for stable, correct, and maintainable code.
Bonus qualifications include deep expertise in AWS or GCP production environments at scale, advanced experience with Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code tools, proven track record with Kubernetes and ArgoCD, strong SRE background including SLOs and incident management, experience building robust CI/CD pipelines via GitHub Actions, proficiency with monitoring tools like Prometheus or Grafana, knowledge of cloud-native security and service mesh technologies, and programming ability in at least one language. A B.S. in Computer Science or related technical field is preferred.
The position is hybrid, requiring 3 days per week in the Tempe office with Thursdays as a mandatory in-office day. Compensation includes base pay of $180,504–$236,911 annually, plus benefits, unlimited vacation, equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.
