Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering buy-now-pay-later solutions without hidden fees or compounding interest. We're seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm's production systems. This role blends traditional distributed systems engineering with AI-assisted development to give teams a unified place to understand, debug, and improve service health.
You'll own quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems while ensuring strong support throughout delivery. You'll collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, articulating technical constraints and partnering on decisions that balance risks and trade-offs. You'll proactively identify and advocate for project, process, technology, and business improvements, then lead solutions.
Responsibilities include supporting operations and availability of team artifacts through metrics creation and monitoring, escalating issues as needed, and participating in on-call efforts. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, advocating for them across teams through writing and tech talks. You'll develop talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
Required qualifications: 4+ years as a software engineer with experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes. Experience shipping web apps with declarative UI frameworks like React or Vue. Practical use of LLMs or AI frameworks to enhance automation with guardrails and citations. Ability to define technical plans for significant features with elegant, simple, extensible designs. You write high-quality, easily understood code and can make significant changes safely in large codebases. Strong ownership of your growth, seeking feedback proactively. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience required.
