Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, offering buy-now-pay-later solutions without hidden fees or compounding interest. The ML Feature Platform team is one of two core ML Platform teams at Affirm, working alongside the ML Training & Serving Platform to create the ML + Data flywheel that powers the company.
The ML Feature Platform's mission is to build a delightful, self-serve platform for developing and serving data for machine learning and decisioning. The team owns end-to-end flows for features, including feature creation, exploration, and serving; data storage, availability, and visibility; and offline backfilling infrastructure and platform improvements. Your work will directly impact MLEs, Analysts, and decisioning teams across Affirm, and the platform's performance is critical to company availability and latency goals.
In this Senior Backend Engineer role, you will own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems while ensuring team support throughout delivery. You'll collaborate with product management, design, and analytics on ideation, articulating technical constraints and partnering on decisions that balance risks and trade-offs. You'll proactively identify and advocate for project, process, technology, and business improvements, then lead in solving them.
You'll support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and participating in on-call efforts. You'll foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, advocating for them through writing and tech talks, and helping develop talent on your team through feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
You bring 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin. You have a proven track record building highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes. You excel at defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, and extensible designs, writing high-quality code that others easily understand and use. You're proficient at making significant changes in large codebases and have developed tools and practices enabling safe, rapid iteration. You take ownership of your growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders, and communicate effectively with global engineering teams.
