Pliant is a Berlin-based European fintech specializing in B2B payment solutions. The company operates a modular, API-first platform that helps businesses streamline spending, improve cash flow, and integrate payments into their financial workflows. Founded in 2020, Pliant is a licensed e-money institution (EMI) issuing credit cards in 11 currencies across 30+ countries, serving over 4,000 businesses and 20+ partners globally. The Card & Transaction Platform team owns Pliant's most critical backend flows: card issuance and transaction processing. The team maintains a high availability bar through solid engineering and a no-blame culture. With a fast-growing customer base and rising request volumes, this role seeks an experienced backend engineer who anticipates problems and prevents them before they impact customers. Key responsibilities include defining, measuring, and improving SLOs/SLAs and error budgets for critical services; evolving and scaling the platform to handle growing customer base and request volumes; proactively identifying weak points, risky patterns, and capacity limits early; participating in a fair 24/7 on-call rotation and leading incident response from mitigation through blameless postmortems; owning observability across dashboards, alerting, tracing, and logging using Datadog; designing, building, and shipping new product features end-to-end across Java/Spring Boot microservices; and balancing feature delivery with continuous improvement through collaboration with product and engineering teams. Required qualifications include 5+ years building and operating modern distributed backend services on Java/Spring Boot with AWS, Kafka, and PostgreSQL; proven track record with high-availability systems where reliability matters, including scaling under growing load; fluency with modern observability stacks and SLO/SLA thinking; proactive ownership mindset; end-to-end feature ownership from design through delivery; and hands-on experience using AI effectively as an engineering tool. Nice-to-have experience includes payments, card issuing, or transaction processing domain knowledge; PCI DSS certification or operating experience; fraud detection/prevention exposure; chaos/resilience testing, capacity planning, or load testing; and safe deployment practices such as canary deployments, blue/green, or progressive rollouts. Pliant offers competitive remuneration, choice of OS (Windows or Mac), flat hierarchy with transparent communication, remote work flexibility, professional development opportunities, and a Pliant Card with monthly credit.
