Wag! Group Co. operates a multi-brand platform serving pet owners and caregivers across the United States. The company pioneered on-demand dog walking through its flagship Wag! app (500,000+ pet caregivers nationwide) and operates complementary businesses including Petted (pet insurance marketplace), Dog Food Advisor (pet food reviews), WoofWoofTV (18M+ social followers), and maxbone (pet essentials e-commerce). This Senior Backend Engineer role focuses on building and scaling the core backend platform that powers millions of pet owners and caregivers. You will own the backend API layer, cloud infrastructure, and internal systems that support the entire Wag! ecosystem. Key responsibilities include: architecting and maintaining the PHP/Laravel API built on OpenAPI specifications with domain-driven design patterns; building internal backend systems in Python, including AWS Lambda services; managing production AWS infrastructure (ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, Parameter Store, CloudWatch, IAM) via Terraform; participating in production monitoring and incident response; and integrating AI-powered solutions into products. A critical aspect of this role is building and improving agent workflows, context, and tooling that enable the team to develop effectively with AI coding agents in a large codebase. The team is small, fast-paced, and values engineers who thrive working across the stack to solve complex problems. You will contribute to architectural decisions, break down features into releasable components, estimate timelines, and collaborate cross-functionally. The role requires demonstrated experience building workflows and products with AI tools—this is a core requirement, not optional. This is a full-time, in-person position (5 days/week) in the downtown Miami office. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
