You'll join as a Senior Backend Engineer in a hands-on individual contributor role, taking ownership of backend services running at real scale. Your responsibilities include designing and maintaining APIs and services that power the platform, taking end-to-end ownership from design through deployment and on-call support. You'll address performance and reliability challenges as usage grows, evolving systems already in production rather than designing theoretical solutions. You'll instrument systems for observability, design security from the start, and build data models and pipelines that provide organizers and the business with actionable insights.
Beyond individual contribution, you'll participate in design reviews and code reviews across teams, weighing in on technical decisions that affect other parts of the organization. You'll mentor earlier-career engineers through code review, pairing, and direct feedback, and participate in technical interviews and calibration.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of backend engineering experience shipping production systems in fast-paced environments. You should have deep expertise in backend fundamentals: APIs, data modeling, distributed systems, and event-driven architecture. Proficiency in relevant technologies (Java, Node.js, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, AWS or similar) is required, along with hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and containerized application deployment. You've scaled systems operationally—not just on paper—and have experience evolving live architecture under load. You're pragmatic about technology choices, can defend tradeoffs clearly to engineers, product, and business stakeholders. Experience at consumer, social, or marketplace companies is a plus.
