Motive is a fleet operations platform serving nearly 100,000 customers across transportation, logistics, construction, energy, and other industries. The company provides unified visibility and control over drivers, vehicles, equipment, and fleet spend, powered by industry-leading AI. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Equipment Monitoring team, you will design and build backend systems that give fleets real-time visibility into the location, utilization, and health of their equipment—trailers, reefers, construction machinery, and small assets. You'll work with data from IoT devices in the field (Asset Gateways, BLE sensors, Beacons) and develop the ingestion and stream-processing pipelines (Kafka, Flink) that transform raw sensor telemetry into accurate real-time locations, geofence events, trips, and alerts. Key responsibilities include: - Develop highly observable, reliable, and scalable backend services processing telemetry from hundreds of thousands of IoT devices - Build and operate stream-processing pipelines powering geofencing, alerting, trip construction, and asset location - Design, build, and maintain scalable APIs for internal and external applications - Collaborate with Embedded, IoT, and cross-functional teams on device data contracts and end-to-end feature delivery - Champion engineering excellence by reducing technical debt and improving code quality - Leverage AI tools (Cursor, CoPilot) to increase productivity - Work on AWS Cloud infrastructure and mentor other engineers You'll need 5+ years of software development experience, expertise in distributed systems and event-driven/stream-processing pipelines (Kafka, Flink, Kinesis), proficiency in modern languages (Ruby, Golang, Kotlin/Java preferred), experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, Cassandra), and cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, Azure). IoT/sensor data or geospatial systems experience is a plus. The role requires hybrid presence in the office two days per week.
