The Risk team at Dave builds event-driven, asynchronous decisioning systems that assess user risk and behavior in real-time. These systems must be fast, resilient, and auditable at scale. The team is responsible for validating user identity and actions while providing critical analytics to the platform.
In this Senior Backend Engineer role, you will design and build backend services in TypeScript for real-time and asynchronous risk decisioning. You'll build and maintain event-driven workflows using queues, pub/sub, and cloud task infrastructure, and design state machines to model multi-step decisioning and verification flows. You'll work closely with product, operations, and infrastructure teams to build and scale backend services, participate in code reviews, own end-to-end delivery of small to medium-sized projects from design through production, provide technical leadership to guide the team's technical direction, and mentor other engineers through pairing and guidance.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of software development experience
- Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture (message queues, pub/sub, or similar)
- Experience with cloud task/job scheduling systems (Cloud Tasks, SQS, Celery, or equivalent)
- Experience designing or implementing state machines for multi-step workflows
- Strong CS fundamentals and problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to work as part of a team
- Programming experience in TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js) or Java, Python, C/C++, Go
- Experience with MySQL and Google Cloud Platform
- Effective communication skills, positive attitude, ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- Ability to discuss and explain system architecture and design
- Comfortable using AI tools in engineering workflow with sound judgment about when to rely on them
