Customer.io is a communication platform used by over 9,000 companies to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS daily. The company powers automated, behavior-driven communication at massive scale using Go, React, Ember, and AI.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll design and build distributed systems that enable reliable, performant communication delivery. You'll own problems end-to-end—from architecture and schema design through testing, deployment, and monitoring. Key responsibilities include:
• Design and build distributed systems in Go that help customers send timely, relevant messages at scale
• Collaborate across teams to debug issues and deliver reliable solutions
• Own problems end-to-end, taking technical decisions from conception to production
• Share knowledge through public content, writing, and mentorship
• Use AI agents to assist with multi-file code changes
The role requires 7+ years of experience building scalable, distributed systems in Go or similar statically typed languages. You should be comfortable in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP), familiar with relational databases (MySQL), and experienced with observability tooling and production operations. The ideal candidate has a bias for action, takes pride in technical ownership, and thinks like a user—understanding how systems power real customer value.
