Customer.io is a communication platform used by over 9,000 companies to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS daily. The company powers automated, behavior-driven communication at massive scale using Go, React, Ember, and AI. As a Senior Software Engineer on the backend team, you will design and build distributed systems that enable customers to send timely, relevant messages at scale. You'll own problems end-to-end—from architecture and schema design through testing, deployment, and monitoring. Your work will directly impact how billions of messages are delivered reliably and performantly. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build distributed systems in Go for message delivery and customer communication infrastructure - Collaborate across teams to debug production issues and deliver reliable solutions - Own technical decisions and architectural choices for backend systems - Share knowledge through mentorship, public writing, and technical leadership - Leverage AI agents to accelerate multi-file code changes You bring 7+ years of experience building scalable, distributed systems in Go or similar statically typed languages. You're comfortable in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP), understand relational databases (MySQL) and performance tradeoffs, and have hands-on experience with observability tooling and production systems. You bias toward action over perfection, take pride in owning technical decisions, and think like a user—understanding how your systems create customer value. The company values ownership, product-minded engineering, and healthy skepticism of "the way things are done." You'll work in an environment that emphasizes transparency, inclusive benefits (100% medical/dental/vision coverage, 16 weeks paid parental leave, unlimited PTO), and professional development support.
