As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the design and scaling of backend systems powering core product lines including Bill Pay and Apron Card, as well as critical infrastructure like fraud detection. You'll work cross-functionally with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to ship features from discovery through production. Your responsibilities include designing financial integrations where security and speed are equally critical, and mentoring other engineers by sharing experience, driving innovation, and raising the bar for the team.
The role requires 8+ years of continuous backend engineering experience in product-led, fast-paced environments (startups or tech companies). You must be proficient in JVM-based languages, ideally Kotlin, with strong expertise in relational databases and their trade-offs at scale. A keen eye for code quality, efficient architecture, and performance optimization is essential. Preferred qualifications include hands-on Kotlin experience, Kubernetes and Terraform expertise, and deep PostgreSQL knowledge (GIST indexes, partitioning, replication).
