Aalyria is a leading aerospace technology company supplying laser communications and temporospatial software-defined networking platforms. The company, which acquired technology from Google, specializes in satellite and airborne mesh networks, cislunar and deep-space communications, and is revolutionizing orchestration and management of planetary mesh networks across land, sea, air, and space.
We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join the Spacetime team and help build the next generation of our platform, focusing on orchestration of 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and Direct-to-Cell services. You will coordinate between satellite operators and terrestrial mobile networks through 3GPP- and O-RAN-aligned interfaces.
Spacetime orchestrates radio resource management, scheduling of pointing and handovers for steerable directional antennas and laser terminals, and control plane routing and switching across highly dynamic networks such as non-geostationary satellite constellations. In the cellular domain, Spacetime acts as the RIC/SMO for the NTN itself, extending the platform with RAN and Core network models and federation interfaces for TN-NTN coordination with terrestrial mobile network operators' SMOs.
This is fundamentally a software engineering role. You will design and build distributed systems in a modern, cloud-native codebase, working alongside 3GPP/NTN solution architects who own standards and systems expertise. Engineers on the team routinely acquire telecom domain knowledge on the job; deep prior knowledge is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining the Spacetime platform using C++, Golang, Java, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers; building scalable distributed systems on Kubernetes; designing features for 5G NTN and Direct-to-Cell orchestration including RIC/SMO capabilities, network model extensions, and federation APIs; translating 3GPP and O-RAN specifications into clean, well-tested software; integrating with other Aalyria platform components; developing and maintaining design documentation; staying current with 5G NTN, O-RAN, and satellite communications trends; and writing clean, maintainable, efficient code.
